On Friday, 6 March, Rev. Dr. Richard CARTER of the CTS faculty attended a guest lecture at Lutheran Theological Seminary (LTS). Speaking was Dr. Christine HELMER, Professor of Religious Studies and German at Northwestern University, Evanston (Chicago), Illinois. Her topic was "How Luther became the Reformer." In particular she demonstrated ways in which German theologians from 1883 to 1921 selected and publicised only those parts of Luther's writings that emphasised the importance of Christians, especially Germans, being strong men. She encouraged careful reading of Luther's works, not just works about Luther, and she noted especially Luther's extensive work in studying the Bible and his emphasis on God's grace.
